Freight variable gauge
Design, prototyping and testing on bench and on track of a wheelset for freight trains that changes gauge automatically as it runs through a changing station.
The project was initiated by ADIF (Spanish Rail Infrastructure Administrator) and was successfully completed with 250.000 km of track tests and 1.00 changing operations.
The system is homologated by the Spanish Rail Security Agency and has moved into a new phase for a commertial prototype..

State of the art
OGI Axis
The OGI gauge change system is specifically designed for freight trains.
Its design allows for on-the-move gauge change without unloading the wheels.
The system is designed for Iberian-International gauge, compatible with combinations of up to 3 different gauges (Iberian - Russian - International).

The system is designed for Iberian-International gauge, compatible with combinations of up to 3 different gauges (Iberian - Russian - International).
The system is approved according to the Spanish ETH (Technical Specifications for Interoperability) in its version 1.0, for a large wheel diameter of 920mm/22.5 tons per axle and a small wheel diameter of 760mm/16 tons per axle.
The system is designed as an axle compatible with existing towed vehicles. Only the existing shoe brake system needs to be adapted.

Mercave project
The ecosystem of public R&D contracts launched by ADIF between 2021 and 2022 for the development of the second generation of OGI axles is referred to as the MERCAVE Project.
TRIA Ingeniería is involved in 3 out of the 4 contracts of the MERCAVE project.
Exp 0089: Development of 2nd Generation OGI Axles €5,000,000
Exp 0002: 2nd Generation Gauge Changers €2,600,000
Exp 0103: Adaptation of 2nd Generation OGI Wagons €800,000

The MERCAVE PROJECT involves the development of:
- EAxle 1.1 and Axle 2.0, with improvements in maintainability and reliability.
- The development of a new optimized gauge changer, shorter and transportable, following the standards of the TCRS2 and TCRS3 gauge changers manufactured by TRIA Ingeniería.
- The preparation of a set of wagons owned by ADIF for on-track testing of the new 1.1 version of the OGI axles.
